Your first steps into the backcountry.

If you’re new to backcountry touring, this weekend is for you! It’s immersive and comprehensive, and by Sunday you’ll have the skills and confidence to use your gear correctly, move efficiently uphill and downhill, understand terrain choice, and start planning and enjoying your own beginner-friendly tours.

In this 3 Day Course we’ll learn

  • how to use our avalanche rescue gear to perform a rescue

  • how to read an avalanche forecast

  • how to set up and transition our gear from uphill to downhill mode

  • proper ethics for backcountry travel

  • principles for good decision making during backcountry travel

  • basic navigation (an understanding of how to read the mountains, not just the map)

  • how to identify avalanche terrain, beginner friendly terrain, complex terrain, etc.

All while wigglin’ and giggling’ through the snow.

Expect a balance of skin-track chats, pro tips, and hands-on lessons in a supportive, empowering crew of gals, led by a female AMGA/AAA trained guide. You’ll walk away from the weekend with a solid foundation of backcountry skills that will have you prepared for mellow tours in the backcountry with friends, and an itch to learn more!

Each weekend will have its own Apres events schedules.

Tahoe/Truckee:

Your first steps into the backcountry.

    • You’ve toured a few times and now you’re ready to build a real foundation—skills you can practice, refine, and grow with all season long.

    • You’re comfortable on blue runs at the resort

    • You have moderate fitness

    • You want a supportive, all women’s learning environment, led by an AMGA trained female guide

  • Day 1 – Avalanche Rescue

    This one-day course is designed to help you build (or refresh) your rescue fundamentals through hands-on practice and real-world scenarios.

    In this course we’ll cover:

    • Using your beacon, probe, and shovel efficiently

    • Working within a rescue team

    • Managing a scene safely and effectively

    • Building confidence through repetition and guided feedback

    • What to Do After the Rescue (First Aid/Evacuation)

    Day 2 & 3 – Touring + Instruction

    Day 2: We’ll dial in our gear and master basic movement techniques, like skinning, kick turns, and skiing/riding unpredictable backcountry snow.

    Day 3: We’ll learn how to read the mountains, not the map. We’ll expand on our skills by moving through lots of different types of terrain and develop our spatial awareness skills in the backcountry. We’ll explore terrain identification, basic navigation, and avalanche safety and awareness. We’ll relate it all back to making safe, smart travel decisions.

    • We’ll spend time focusing on skills and moving through mellow terrain

    • Lots of coaching, practice, && pro tips

    • An environment that values education over intimidation and empowerment over ego.

    • A welcoming community of women also beginning their backcountry journey

    • An experienced female AMGA/AAA trained guide to lead you through the weekend

    • Lots of giggles, wiggles, and yes, biodegradable sparkles (because who doesn’t love feeling sparkly)

  • Apres is ESSENTIAL after earning your turns. Each weekend will have its own specific events. These may include one or two of the following:

    Ski/Snowboard Specific Yoga from a Certified Yoga Instructor

    Cold Plunge/Sauna Experience

    Exclusive Sip && Shop Experience

    Gear Maintenance Clinic

    Happy Hour #ferdagirls @ a local venue
