Do you always just go along with other people’s tour plans? Feeling like you’d love to be able to take control and start planning tours of your own?

Planning a safe and enjoyable backcountry tour involves more than just picking a route.We’ll work together as a crew to plan a tour step by step, then give you the opportunity to plan your own individual tour from start to finish, under the guidance of an experienced AMGA-trained ski/splitboard guide.

By the end of the day, you’ll walk away with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to plan and execute your own tours safely and efficiently — for yourself and your crew.

  • In this course, we’ll cover all the essential elements of planning a safe and enjoyable backcountry tour:

    • How to Decide What, When, and Where to Tour – Choosing a route that fits your crew, conditions, and goals

    • Making (& Sticking to) a Realistic Time Plan – Managing expectations and pacing for a full day in the backcountry

    • Mapping Your Tour with Apps – Using tools like CalTopo and Gaia to plan and visualize your route

    • Decision Making and Communication – Keeping your group safe and coordinated on the move

    • In-Field Considerations & Assessments – Adjusting plans based on conditions and observations

    • The Art of Bailing – Knowing when and how to safely turn back or modify your tour

    By the end of the day, you’ll have a complete framework for planning, executing, and adjusting your own tours with confidence.
