Advanced Snow & Weather Course
If you’ve completed an Avalanche Level 1 or equivalent, and you’re hungry to connect the dots between weather, snowpack, and terrain, this course is for you.
We’ll dig into the fundamentals of mountain meteorology, snowpack analysis, and forecast interpretation — then put theory into practice. Together, we’ll build our own forecast, head into the field, and test our predictions against real-world conditions.
You’ll come away with stronger forecasting skills, a clearer understanding of the relationship between weather and avalanche hazard, and the confidence to make more informed decisions in the backcountry.
-
Day 1 – Classroom Session
A deep dive into the science behind snow and weather. We’ll explore how to interpret forecasts, understand local patterns, and connect the dots between atmospheric conditions and avalanche hazard.
Topics include:Advanced weather forecast analysis
Understanding localized mountain weather patterns
How weather impacts snowpack — short and long term
Advanced snow and avalanche science fundamentals
Day 2 – Field Session
We’ll take what we learned in the classroom and apply it in the field. We’ll test our forecasts against real-world conditions and sharpen our observation skills.
Topics include:Predicting surface and snowpack conditions
Identifying field evidence to support or challenge your forecast
Digging and analyzing a snow pit — what to test, what to look for
Evaluating and testing snow surfaces for stability and structure
